Though Adam had the honor of being the first to hear the voice of God, he would not be the last.
After the end of Adam’s ministry, the Lord then began to commune with Noah. He gave Noah instructions to build an arc in order to preserve his family and the whole of the animal kingdom against the impending tempests that would immerse the earth in water. Years later, an elderly and childless man named Abram received direct revelation that he had found favor with God, and that through his posterity, God would raise up a mighty nation. Abram was renamed Abraham, and was told that despite their old age, he and his wife would bear a son to ensure the fulfillment of this promise. The promise was indeed fulfilled, and the nation of Israel flourished and prospered. When that prosperity was threatened due to the captivity of the Israelite nation by the Egyptians, God spoke with Moses, and gave him the power and authority to work miracles in His name, and be a leader and liberator for His people.
These men all share a singular commonality. They all spoke with God. And as a result of these correspondences, God was able to actuate His grand plans and designs.
These circumstances signify that these men were prophets; spokesmen chosen by God to act as mediums of communication between this earth and the heavens. And they are only a handful of the many examples of prophets that are to be found in recorded scripture.
Prophets have revealed the word and will of God since the days of Adam in the Garden of Eden. They have acted as divinely appointed authorities at the times when the world has been at its heights of confusion, chaos, and turmoil.
The words of prophets are undiluted axioms of God’s wisdom. Once transcribed to scripture, their teachings echo through throughout the ages, and are revered as hallowed existential dogma.
Prophets are an invaluable resource for revelation and salvation. In fact, the Holy Bible states:
“Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7)
The advantages of having a prophet as led many to pose the following question: Where are the prophets today? In response to such a query, one of the most thrilling messages that we, as members of the LDS church, have to declare is that this day and age is no different than any other.
God has prophets on the earth right at this very moment, and they are actively receiving and proclaiming his word.

According to the scripture found in Hebrews 13:8,
“Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Considering that God is unchanging, it would only be sensible for him to do for this day and age as He did biblically and call prophets to lead His children and His church.
Still, many contend that there cannot be anymore prophets. Few, however, are able to explain why. Certainly God has not lost interest in our welfare. Would anyone be cynical enough to believe that God has abandoned us to wander in hapless ignorance at so critical of a time in the history of this globe? At a time when the moral degeneration would rampantly overtake our society? A time when, as many speculate, the second return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is so imminently near? Certainly there can be no disputing the fact that the world is in just as much, if not more need of a prophet now than it has ever been before.
God has ALWAYS used prophets to communicate with mankind, and the scriptures avow that He is unchanging. It would therefore require no large leap of faith to accept that God still operates in modern times in the same ways as He did since the creation of the world and as he will continue to do until the end of it.
Joseph Smith was called as a prophet in 1830 when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was organized under the direction and approval of God. Using Joseph Smith as His servant, God was able to restore the original gospel that Christ established in His mortal years. Divinely sanctioned, both that gospel and church endure to this day.
The man who God has now called to take on the mantle of a prophet today is a man named Thomas S. Monson. Monson follows a long list of prophetic predecessors that can be traced back to Adam. He is inspired and personally imbued with God’s word and will. His counsel is tailored to combat whatever spiritual threats beset our world at this present time. He has spoken with God face to face, as a man would speak to a friend, because such has been and always will be the privilege of prophets.
I add my personal testimony as a witness to two prophets since my birth in 1990. They are men called of God. Thomas S. Monson is God’s living prophet on the earth today, and God speaks to us through him. Of course, as with all spiritual things, the truth can only be found through diligent scripture study and personal prayer. Every word that I have written is completely meaningless to you if you do not do as I have done and receive your own spiritual witness. This will be a confirmation that can only be obtained by studying the messages God has revealed through Joseph Smith, Thomas Monson, and the other prophets, to confirm their accordance with the cause of righteousness and then receiving a gentle affirmation of the Holy Ghost in response to an honest and earnest inquiry through prayer.
